On May 16, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia hosted a special seminar titled “Reflecting on the Original Intention of Diplomatic Relations, China-Malaysia Joining Hands for Progress.” Over 30 representatives from friendly organizations, the Chinese community, expatriate groups, think tanks, and youth organizations from both China and Malaysia attended. Ambassador Ouyang Yujing delivered a keynote speech titled “Staying True to Our Original Intentions, Upholding Principles, and Promoting the Steady and Long-Term Development of the China-Malaysia Community with a Shared Future.”

Ambassador Ouyang Yujing noted that on May 31, 1974, Premier Zhou Enlai and Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak signed the Joint Communiqué between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of Malaysia. This event marked Malaysia as the first ASEAN country to establish diplomatic relations with China, opening a new chapter in the development of China-Malaysia relations. The older generations of leaders from both countries, navigating through the challenges and obstacles of their time, chose the right path and brought China and Malaysia, two friendly neighbors, together, setting a precedent and model for friendly cooperation in the region.
Ambassador Ouyang emphasized that the Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia explicitly states the One-China principle. China appreciates the Malaysian government’s long-standing and steadfast position on this principled issue and its positive statements. He elaborated on the historical and legal foundations that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, stating that China’s reunification will bring more development opportunities to all countries, inject more energy into the prosperity and stability of the Asia-Pacific region and the world, and contribute significantly to building a community with a shared future for humanity, global peace, and human progress. “The complete reunification of our country must and will be achieved,” he asserted. China is willing to continue strengthening cooperation with Malaysia and the international community on the basis of upholding the One-China principle, and to maintain international and regional peace and stability.

Ambassador Ouyang highly praised the substantial progress in bilateral relations in recent years. He emphasized that the two countries should further deepen political mutual trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, promote cultural exchanges, and strengthen regional collaboration. Standing at a new historical starting point, he called for upholding the original intentions of establishing diplomatic relations, working together to create a promising future, and advancing the construction of the China-Malaysia community with a shared future in a steady and sustainable manner.
The participants at the seminar reflected on the 50 years of friendly exchanges between China and Malaysia and shared their personal experiences and observations. They expressed their commitment to revisiting the Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations, upholding the original intentions of establishing diplomatic ties, and particularly maintaining adherence to the One-China principle. They pledged to promote the vigorous development of bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields through concrete actions, contributing to the next 50 years of China-Malaysia relations and adding to the construction of the China-Malaysia community with a shared future.

President Sun Jianwei and Vice President Guo Jianfeng were invited to attend the seminar and delivered speeches.
